Principles and Vision that align with Dave Hayes

Dave Hayes has shown a lifetime of service to the community. Rex will support Dave’s run for Sheriff, and when elected, Rex will seek a position of authority at the Boulder Sheriff’s Department where these principles can still be addressed.

Develop a Resilient Community: Preparing for, responding to and recovering from wildland fires, floods, the next pandemic and more. Boulder County is seeing an increase in wildfires, human trafficking, Illegal drug use and other criminal activity. The Sheriff’s Deputies and Police Officers cannot stop this on their own, this needs to be a team effort.

Keep Drugs Away From Our Children: In 2019, Colorado passed law called HB 19-1263, which made the possession of less than 4 grams of drugs like Ecstasy, Heroin, Fentanyl, Meth and others only a misdemeanor.

Protect our Animals, Homes, Open Spaces and the Environment: Holding the line and enforcing the law to protect our citizens, visitors, animals and the environment is the priority.

Take Care of Our Law Enforcement Officers, First Responders and their Families: Developing more programs to recruit, retain, support and professionally develop the brave men and women that protect Boulder County is vital. More mental health support for Deputies and other members of the Law Enforcement and First Responder community is needed to provide the tools to cope with and reduce stress, which will enhance their quality of life and allow these heroes and their families to recover faster. First Responders answer the call whenever the community dials 9-1-1, and we have to support them, as well!

Restore Confidence in Law Enforcement: Focusing on accountability in our Deputies and pursuing diversity, equity and inclusion in hiring and planning. When we can do this, it will be possible to gain the community’s trust, and then be able to recruit locally. We might also have a fighting chance to retain our officers that are regularly recruited by states like Florida and Texas.

Help Streamline the Marshall Fire Recovery Effort: Rex not only fought the Marshall Fire, evacuated people, animals and protected remaining structures, he is also very involved in the recovery effort. He has spent countless days helping to get clothing and shoes to needing families; set up a volunteer network that moves furniture and other essential household items for fire survivors; and has been a connector and advisor to the major organizations that are helping our community members. He doesn’t want a single family to be forced to move. Since he isn’t a county employee, he can look at objectives from a different angle and is able to suggest innovative solutions. With his background in International Disaster Response / Relief, he can offer perspectives that many others in the county haven’t experienced yet.

Focus on Underserved and Underrepresented Populations: Protecting those that cannot fully protect themselves. Rex has helped the Latin-x Community by improving neighborhoods with volunteer cleanups; speaking to student groups about resources and military careers that lead to citizenship; and personally helping several Latin-x families by building their homes with Habitat for Humanity. He supports other amazing organizations like S.P.A.N. and wants everyone in the County to feel safe. We are all Boulder County.

Address Cybersecurity and Fraud Protection: Implementing innovative tools to get ahead of the threat to reduce risk and mitigate loss.

Find better ways to make our Jail “Work”: Rex will never turn away criminals being brought in to the jail. Criminals must be brought to justice and their contraband taken off the streets.

Practice Fiscal Responsibility: Using innovation and transparency to improve how taxpayer money is spent, while expanding our resources. When Rex was serving in Afghanistan, he controlled a budget of over 330 Million U.S. Dollars and was responsible for an area of operation that spanned over 15,000 square miles. He is also the only candidate that hasn’t been doing the same thing for decades. A fresh look at where our resources is being spent is vital.

Educate and Engage the Community: Empowering and educating the community to help in their own neighborhoods creates a team effort with Law Enforcement and Public Safety Officers. Colorado is ranked # 3 in the nation for child addiction to drugs. Rex will make it one of his primary focuses to support programs to educate kids, parents and empower schools to win this war on child addiction. He will also help strengthen the community by offering more programs like Citizen’s Academy and offer weekly workshops that help people prepare for the next fire, flood and other natural disasters.

“Brilliance in the Basics”: Having the most proficient and best trained department in the Nation! Boulder County is an amazing place to live and visit. Rex is committed to do everything he can to protect it by having the best team, equipment and community support possible.
